STILL SUMMER, STILL FAB
Well, that went fast…
Summer, we hardly knew ya! After a slow start to sun and warm temps, then weekends riddled with rain, it finally began feeling like the season at hand, what, like a month ago? And, just like that, we’re back to 70s and breezy days.
We’re not giving up on summer just yet, though! We’ve got a few events to keep the vibe going through this month; mark your calendars now and stay outside with FAB all September! Check this out:
- ART360 returns to Clinton Hill, in Jitu Weusi Plaza (Fulton + Grand) — it’ll be a fun, creative afternoon, urging everyone who comes out to “Make It & Take It!” You can participate in a painting party, glass bead crafting, tape art activities, or customize a tote bag. All free and for all ages, Saturday, September 6, from 12 – 4 pm.
- Jazz at Jitu winds down with the finale concert, welcoming George Gray to the plaza, on Thursday, September 11. Show time is 5 pm, an earlier start for an earlier sunset. Come early (4pm) for a Community Health & Family Resource event by Pride Family Services, featuring giveaways and resource information.
- Keep your jazz fix going with the two-part BMS Jazz Series in Fort Greene. Once again, faculty musicians from Brooklyn Music School will take over Fowler Square Plaza (Fulton + Lafayette) on two Friday dates (September 12 and 26) for happy hour jam session sets that start at 4:30 pm.
- Demo Day will return to the FAB Fulton corridor later this month (Wed., September 24), highlighting another handful of businesses you should know in the nabe! Stay tuned for details on participants and chances to pick up samples and other giveaways!
In addition to these cool events, pop in to some of the newest small businesses to arrive in our district on FAB Fulton, and show them some love, the Brooklyn way: Samyan (848 Fulton), House of Wonder (982 Fulton), Saint Street Cakes (86 S. Portland), We Nail Bar (57 Lafayette), All Buru Sushi (64 Lafayette), and Uniquely Me Creative Arts (1047 Fulton).
PLAZA REMINDERS
New York City plazas are open through October 31, so there is still plenty of time for lunching, people watching, and hanging out with friends in the FAB-area public spaces on Fulton Street. However, with earlier sunsets, our maintenance crew will begin to bring in plaza furniture on an earlier schedule. Please be kind and allow them to properly move the furniture at the end of each day.
TAKE CARE OF THE TREES!
Hug a tree this fall: FAB is working with the Big Reuse to clean, care for, and add mulch to tree beds in Brooklyn’s District 35, and they’ll be back in our area on Saturday, September 27 from 12 – 2 pm. All skill levels are welcome to celebrate Climate Week, working on trees in need in Clinton Hill, near Jitu Weusi Plaza; materials and supplies will be provided. Team up with a friend or family member to do some good in the neighborhood and sign up here.
C TRAIN RENOVATIONS IMPACT STAIRS IN THE FAB DISTRICT
In case you missed it: the stairs to the C train entrance located on S. Oxford at Fulton (on the side of Yori Box) are now closed for repair. According to the MTA, this entrance will be unavailable through at least October. You can access the C train, in both directions, at the stairs located nearby at the corner of Fulton and Greene, by the Cuyler Gore Park entrance.
SAFE DISPOSAL EVENT – BROOKLYN
DSNY hosts SAFE (Solvents, Automotive, Flammables, and Electronics) Disposal events to help NYC residents safely get rid of certain harmful household products.
Events are held every year and in all five boroughs. DSNY accepts automotive products, electronics, household chemicals, medical waste, and other items that are dangerous to dispose of, because they are toxic, corrosive, or could catch fire.
The next event in Brooklyn is set for Sunday, September 21, at Floyd Bennett Field. Get more information here.
COMMUNITY NOTICE: UPCOMING COMMUNITY BOARD MEETING
A proposed rezoning is underway for 395 Flatbush Ext. (between DeKalb and Fulton). This is the corner across from Junior’s and Brooklyn Paramount, above the DeKalb Ave B/Q/R subway entrance, three blocks away from Fort Greene Park. There are numerous considerations regarding affordability and environmental impacts on the nearby park and green space.
The project is entering ULURP (Uniform Land Use and Review Process), and is being reviewed by Brooklyn Community Board 2. Interested community stakeholders can attend the Public Hearing set for Wednesday, September 3 at 6 pm, at St. Francis College (179 Livingston). More details here.
FREE TIX AT FAB BARS
Barclays Center is an amazing venue for sports and concerts, and they have generously supplied FAB FULTON with tickets for giveaways via the Downtown Brooklyn Neighborhood Association (DBNA). Just in the past week alone, we’ve sent lucky winners to the Reggae Fest Massive, a New York Liberty game, and the Nine Inch Nails concert!
How can you get in on the fun? Hang out at local FAB nightspots like Island Shack, Fancy Free, Casanara, Fulton Hall, and DSK! (Follow them for updates.) Grab drinks, cheer for your fave sports team, and even compete in trivia contests — you never know when you might walk away with some free tix!
