Did it creep up on ya? Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 11, and if you haven’t planned in advance, you may be searching for the perfect gift or outing to celebrate the special moms in your life. We have a few FAB ideas you might consider:

And May is also Small Business Month, so you can show local merchants some love while expressing yours for Mom; it’s a win-win…

BRUSHES + BEADS: AN ART360 EVENT ON MAY 17
Mark your calendars for the afternoon of Saturday, May 17, and plan to join the communal table at Fowler Square Plaza (Fulton and Lafayette). You’ll get to choose your artistic endeavor: grab a canvas and paint a Brooklyn landscape, or create a wearable work of art with beads! In activities led by local creatives, you’ll sit with neighbors while making art, in a space that encourages community connection and conversation. Sign-up sheets are coming soon — and start thinking about the small bites and snacks you’ll bring to nosh on while painting!
POPULAR FULTON STREET BUS LINE TO GET EXPANDED SERVICE
The B26 line (Fulton St-Ridgewood) is one of four heavily used Brooklyn buses slated for increased service starting this summer. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the expanded service, set to begin June 29, is expected to decrease travel times, shorten commutes, and reduce rider wait times.
A PAUSE TO BETTER LEARN TO TRASH LAWS
Well, well, well: after only a few weeks of citywide enforcement, City officials and the Sanitation Department have decided to pause some of the new composting fines, as reported by Patch.
Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement that “in an effort to facilitate even higher participation, we will conduct additional outreach and education on composting before issuing fines to the most persistent offenders who repeatedly refuse to compost.”
The warning period for the new law went into effect in October 2024 and ended on April 1. The reversal on fines comes after officials said many New Yorkers complained about how the new composting rules were confusing, with some unsure which sanitation bin to use. According to reports, DSNY issued more than 4,000 tickets in just over two weeks since the new rules were implemented. The mayor’s office has said all composting fines will resume in 2026.

1024 FULTON STREET FEEDBACK REPORT
Did you attend one of the Visioning Workshops for the future of 1024 Fulton in Clinton Hill? Empire State Development recently shared the results of those community sessions in a Visioning Report, which you can read here. You already know the drill: spring is fleeting. Although it was just winter a handful of days ago, the sweltering summer temps will be here soon enough. Start thinking about cooling off NOW!
The NYC Cooling Assistance benefit helps eligible households buy and install an air conditioner or fan to help their home stay cool. Benefits are provided on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible NYC applicants. How much is available? The benefit is worth up to $800 for a window, portable air conditioner, or fan, and up to $1,000 for an existing wall sleeve unit. It will even cover the removal of your old unit!
Applications for this year’s program opened on April 15, and interested applicants should apply as soon as possible. You can go here to determine your eligibility and learn more about what you need to apply.
