SPRING THINGS (TO DO)!

WE OUTSIDE AGAIN!

If that’s your battle cry this season, we hear you, and if you’re looking for cool events and places to be during the warm-weather season, we’ve got you. You’ve gotta save the dates!

Love culture, music, and food? Say less — and make sure BAM’s Dance Africa is on your calendar this month. This Memorial Day weekend, the nation’s largest festival dedicated to African diasporic dance and music opens Brooklyn’s stages and streets to the rich culture and artistry of Uganda. Now in its 49th year, this year’s festival honors the East African nation’s past, celebrates its present, and rejoices in its future — and it’s right in your backyard, throughout the month of May. Get info here.

If you’ve been patiently anticipating the World Cup, you’re in luck: the whole City is gearing up for activities focused on the world’s most popular sport. And in our area, the hot ticket is a beer hall gathering! Black Forest Brooklyn (733 Fulton) has been hosting unforgettable World Cup watch parties since 2013. Expect the full beer hall atmosphere, with massive screens, stadium-level sound, themed specials, ticketed premium seating options, and more. Grab a reservation here. Be on the lookout for announcements from DSK Brooklyn (710 Fulton), Fancy Free (71 Lafayette), and Fulton Hall (250 Ashland), which may also broadcast key matchups.

Want a new experience while supporting local business? Check! May is NYC Small Business Month, so be sure to follow social media feeds and search the websites of your fave FAB-area merchants for special events like cake decorating at Saint Street Cakes; hands-on creative workshops at Cardinal Gift Shop; junk journaling and other paper projects at Yours Truly Brooklyn, wine education classes at Leon & Son Wine; art, wellness and community gatherings at By Any Other Name dispensary, and take in live music at bars like Bati Kitchen, Sisters, and Endswell.

And as always, FAB has a lineup of fun stuff coming your way, too: get fit with free plaza fitness sessions on select Thursdays in May; enjoy Jazz at Jitu (see more below) again this warm-weather season; and ART360 returns to Fowler Square Plaza on May 30 to feed your springtime creative urge. And while we’re still working on details, there will be a FAB Flicks movie screening in Jitu Weusi Plaza on June 11. Be sure to follow FAB Fulton online and on Instagram, Facebook, BlueSky, and TikTok to stay updated on all the fun!

NEW FAB PET WASTE STATION MAP

If you missed our recent FAB Pet Fest, you may have also missed the news: we installed two more pet waste bag stations in the district. Those new locations, along with the waste bag box in newly renovated Cuyler Gore Park, bring the total number of pet waste bag stations in the FAB Fulton area to six. Please seek out these areas in the district if you need waste bags while walking your dog, and utilize any of the many NYC trash cans (not private or commercial trash bins) along the corridor to dispose of animal waste. It takes a village to keep the village clean, and we’ll help by doing our best to keep these waste stations stocked with bags!

SAY “CHEESE” AND CONGRATULATIONS

ICYMI: a celebration is in order for Smile Space NYC, which recently made two big announcements! First, the popular practice reached a milestone five years after opening during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. That first Clinton Hill location (1035 Fulton) soon grew to an outpost in Harlem. Now, Dr. Corey Black and team look forward to opening their flagship location on nearby Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill by fall 2026! (Read more here.) Congratulations to them for their outstanding growth and success, and put them on your radar for your dental health needs! 🎉

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER WITH BETHEL SDA

Join Bethel SDA Church on Thursday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., as they recognize a National Day of Prayer. Congregation members will be at Jitu Weusi Plaza (Fulton + Grand) offering prayers and taking prayer requests, scheduling future Bible lessons, and sharing health and spiritual literature.

Stop by and fellowship with them on this celebratory day!

JAZZ AT JITU IS BACK!

‘Tis the season: outdoor live jazz is back!

Jazz at Jitu returns for a series of feel-good Thursday evening sets that will get your feet tapping. Save the dates and plan to snag a seat (or bring your own chair):

May 28 – George Gray

June 18 – Rick Dalgetty

August 13 – Stanley Banks

September 10 – Steve Cromity

Jazz at Jitu takes place at Jitu Weusi Plaza (Fulton + Grand), and the set start time is 6 p.m. for all dates except for September 10, when the program will start one hour earlier, at 7 p.m.) In case of rain or inclement weather, all performances will move inside at Grace Agard Harewood Older Adult Center, 966 Fulton.

It’s fun, it’s free, and live jazz will get you revved up and ready for the weekend! Jazz at Jitu is made possible by a grant from Council Member Crystal Hudson.

SAFETY TEAM, PHASE II

You may notice some familiar uniforms back on the corridor: our Safety Ambassador Program has returned for Phase Two, running through June. Mansa and Soumah are out four days a week, helping keep the area welcoming and supported. This season, they’re also gathering feedback from local businesses about safety concerns, which helps us work more closely with city agencies and the NYPD to address issues as they arise. Their presence is all about creating a cleaner, safer, and more connected neighborhood for everyone. Say hi if you see them out and about!
