FAB HAPPENINGS FOR FALL
It’s colder, it’s darker, but there are lots of FAB happenings you don’t want to miss! Here’s a short list:
- BAM Boo! Block Party is Friday, October 31, from 4 -7 pm, on Lafayette Ave, between Ashland Pl and St. Felix St.
- Jamaica Relief Toiletry Drive at UMCA (1047 Fulton St). Check out items needed and donation hours here.
- Daylight Saving Time ends soon; turn your clocks back one hour on Saturday, November 1, before you go to bed.
- Marathon Sunday is November 2, citywide (you can donate a gently used warm coat at the New York Cares kickoff collection box during the race, in Fowler Square Plaza, 8 – 11 am; coat drive continues through December 17).
- Relief Through Rum fundraiser for Jamaica, Monday, November 3 at Casanara (983 Fulton St); 7 pm – midnight.
- Mug Mode workshop at Cardinal Gift Shop (115 S. Oxford St), Thursday, November 6, at 7 pm; register here.
- Mark Morris Community Day is Sunday, November 9, 10 am – 3 pm at 3 Lafayette Ave; RSVP here.

PLAZA SEASON IS ENDING!
Just a reminder that the Fulton Street public plazas on FAB Fulton (Fowler Square Plaza, Gates Avenue Plaza, and Jitu Weusi Plaza) will be officially closed from November 1 through March 31.
Regardless of the weather, the plaza furniture in these spaces will remain locked and stored. In and near each plaza, the silver public benches will still be available for seating. Our street team will continue to clean and maintain the spaces; we’ll see you on April 1 for the reopening of all the plazas!
VOLUNTEER IN DISTRICT 35 THIS THANKSGIVING
On Saturday, November 22nd, from 11 am to 3 pm, the Office of Council Member Crystal Hudson will host the Fourth Annual District 35 Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway at St. Francis de Sales School for the Deaf (270 Eastern Parkway). Together with local partners and volunteers, they plan to give away more than 1,000 turkeys, sides, and bundles of fresh produce (while supplies last), and also connect families with the resources they need to get through the season.
They could use your help! Distributing that much food and coordinating so many moving parts is no small task, and it’s made possible because people like you show up and pitch in. The volunteer sign-up form is now open, and whether it’s your first time or your fourth, there’s a place for everyone — from packing and handing out food to welcoming families as they arrive. However you show up, it makes a difference. Volunteer now and help spread love, the Brooklyn way!
MOIA RESOURCES
The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) has comprehensive legal resources and support for immigrant New Yorkers through several dedicated services. Multilingual resources are available both online and over the phone.
Learn about rights and protections with Know Your Rights booklets in multiple languages on the MOIA site here; and if you or a loved one needs immigration legal assistance, call the MOIA free legal hotline at 800-354-0365 or 311 and say “immigration legal assistance.” The hotline is available to take calls in multiple languages.
FREE SMOKE ALARMS IN NYC
The New York City Fire Department and the American Red Cross are installing FREE smoke alarms for New Yorkers to keep our neighbors safe around the five boroughs.

HAVE AN IDEA FOR PARTICIPATORY BUDGETING? SUBMIT IT NOW!
The vote is not until Spring, but now is the time for ideas! Participatory Budgeting (PB) is back, and the Office of Council Member Crystal Hudson wants YOU to tell them how to spend $1 million across the district. You’ll find more information about this year’s PB cycle, what constitutes an eligible project, how to submit an idea, and how to get involved, here!
Eligible projects are capital projects that benefit the public (not private entities), cost at least $50,000, and have a lifespan of at least 5 years. Capital refers to physical infrastructure (e.g. school buildings, parks, streets, playgrounds, etc) and not programming. Go here to see examples of PB-funded projects from past years. Submit your idea through November 16, here!
SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESS THIS SEASON
As we move into the fall and winter season, we encourage everyone to continue supporting our local small businesses — the heart of the community — by shopping, dining, and spending locally whenever you can. Every purchase makes a difference, especially during a challenging time for many small operators. We’re sad to share that Neal Farinah Salon (709 Fulton) has closed, and Recycle-A-Bicycle (858 Fulton) has relocated to Industry City, but there are so many great neighborhood spots to discover and enjoy right here on Fulton Street!
